Introduction and Terminology
To install SPSS SmartViewer 11.5, run setup.exe and select "Install SmartViewer". If your software is distributed on CD-ROM, setup.exe might be run automatically when you insert the CD-ROM into the drive. If you are installing on a network (and are so licensed), please read the network installation instructions first (on the CD in the Installation Documents directory). Japanese, Chinese, or Korean version of Windows/NT 4.0, Service Pack 3 GetGlyphBug - Users with Japanese, Chinese, or Korean versions of Windows/NT 4.0 with Service Pack 3 should apply the following Glyph hotfix from Microsoft (if it is not applied, Windows NT will crash and a "blue screen" will result): ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/bussys/winnt/winnt-public/fixes/jpn/nt40/hotfixes-postSP3/Glyph-fix/kb.txt Reading New Files in Older VersionsBecause of changes to the format of the SPSS document (*.spo) file, output documents created in SPSS 11.5 or SPSS SmartViewer 11.5 will not be readable in SPSS 9.0.1 or before. Installing SPSS SmartViewer on the Same Machine
SPSS 11.5 for Windows offers all the functionality of SPSS SmartViewer. It is possible to install both SPSS for Windows and SPSS SmartViewer on the same machine, with a couple of caveats. SPSS and SmartViewer must be at the same revision level (currently 11.5) and must be installed in different directories. If both SPSS for Windows and SPSS SmartViewer are installed, double clicking on an Output File will bring up whichever application was last run. Active X Support in Other ContainersSPSS Pivot Tables and Interactive Graphs are Active-X objects that can be embedded in any Active-X container applications. Microsoft Office 97 applications have numerous problems inserting Active-X controls based on the Microsoft Foundation Class library. The Microsoft Office development team is aware of the problems and may offer a fix sometime in the future. Until then, embedding SPSS pivot tables or SPSS Interactive Graphics as Active-X objects in Office 97 applications is not recommended. You can still paste SPSS Pivot Tables and Interactive Graphs as metafiles, which is the default if you have not turned on Active-X embedding in SPSS SmartViewer. Many desktop applications in use today do not support Active-X. For the most part, these applications were built to support older OLE object technology and cannot distinguish between OLE objects that they do support and Active-X or OCX objects that they cannot. A common problem is that when users drag an SPSS Pivot Table or Interactive Graph and drop it into another application, the other application will terminate, report a misleading error message, fail to display the table or graph properly, terminate when the object is activated for editing, or have other problems. These problems also occur when you Copy a Pivot Table or Interactive Graph and Paste it into another application. With Paste Special, you can choose to paste the SPSS Pivot Table or Interactive Graph in some other clipboard format. Because of these difficulties, SPSS SmartViewer will, by default, not put an Active-X object format on the clipboard. If you copy a Pivot Table object, it will be placed in the clipboard in BIFF, metafile and text formats only. If you copy an Interactive Graph object, it will be placed in the clipboard in metafile format. This affects dragging and copying of pivot table objects. If you want SPSS Pivot Table and Interactive Graphics objects to be placed on the clipboard, you can do the following: From the Start>Run menu, run the OBJS-ON.BAT command from the SPSS directory. Line Break CharacterSPSS uses the "~", character, to show line breaks when editing a cell in a pivot table. In North America and Western Europe, this is not likely to be a problem, but if your character set has a useful character at this numeric value, your use of that character will be impeded. If you have this problem, you can change the line break character another character. |
